Question:

Is VISA Debit card payments protected by VISA and chargebacks available?

I have a Halifax VISA Debit and used it recently to buy something online. I was charged twice - so I contacted Halifax for a chargeback.

Are chargebacks available for visa debit, the same way they are available on credit cards?

  1. In this case, you must contact customer service at Halifax and get them to help you dispute the double-billing. The process is a bit more involved and time-consuming than just doing a chargeback on a regular credit card purchase, but it can be done.

They may tell you to first contact the company that double-billed you. Don't be alarmed or offended if that's the first answer they give, they are obligated by law to tell you that. Just do as they say, and only get back to them if the company that double-billed you gives you an unacceptable answer.

Odds are very good this happened as a result of computer error, and sometimes getting anybody to take responsibility for reversing a computer error requires a lot of phone calls.
