Question:

Is Vanguard $3K Roth minimum for all invested funds combined, or for each fund separately?

I'd like to open a Roth IRA at Vanguard, but each fund I want to invest in has a $3,000 minimum.

So, say I allocate 70% in one fund, 20% in another, 10% in another. Will I need $9,000 initial investment to open the Roth?

Or, does the $3,000 minimum apply to the Roth itself, regardless of the funds allocated?

  1. There is no minimum amount required to open a Vanguard Roth IRA.  However, in order to invest in most Vanguard mutual funds you have to put at least $3000 into each fund.  Subsequent investment to the same fund is only $100 increment.   Some Vanguard mutual funds has minimum requirements higher than $3000.

If this is your first time opening an Roth IRA, you may only select one mutual fund.  If you are rolling existing fund into Vanguard then you could possibly have more allocation options.

    Best wishes.

  2. yes it's based on all amounts totalled, regardless of how many separate roths accounts you may have.

as far as the IRS is concerned you will be over your allotted yearly deposits.
