  1. The veggie burgers have a lot less saturated fat, and more of the healthy types of fat.

Also, they contain more nutrients, and if they're made with soy, then they also make up a complete protein source (ie contain all types of the essential amino acids).

On the downside, they have all the flavor of cardboard. That is disputable among many, but for me, I love real hamburgers. No veggie-anything can take the place of red meat for me.

Also, interesting fact about soy: Many recent studies have shown that soy contains high levels of a phyto-estrogen, a type of plant hormone that is closely related to the human female hormone. So close, in fact, that it can cause hormonal imbalances in young children, as well as grown men (women aren't as affected by it). This is why the cultures which had soy at their base are traditionally smaller in stature than the Western cultures who base off of other crops such as corn or wheat. There are exceptions to these, but generally, it holds true.

So yeah, the soy burgers are relatively healthier than the hamburger.

But the 93/7 hamburger isn't that bad for you, either. And the taste is so much better, I think.

  2. Well 9 times out of 10 a veggie burger is more healthy. Some aren't though.

  3. yes they're definately better.  doctors recommend them too to people that are in need of losing weight/getting healthier.

and i think they taste great. find the brand you like and fix it up like you would a real meat burger!

  4. Depends on your taste.  Some people like it better after they try it and some like it less.  Personally I like veggie burgers better, but veggie chicken is better than both of them IMO.

  5. Soy Better than Beef MYTH!

Myth: A soy burger is healthier than a beef burger

Here's the problem: Soy, in all its forms, contains phytoestrogens--that is, plant estrogens. And while having some of the female hormone in our bodies is okay, and even normal, having high amounts of the plant version isn't. In fact, Australian researchers found that men who consumed a soy-rich diet had significantly lower testosterone levels than beef eaters. And as for red meat's artery-clogging reputation, a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition showed that eating lean beef can help to lower LDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL levels.

Reality check: At only 10 percent fat, ground round is the leanest hamburger meat at the market. It also has the potential to taste the worst, since less fat generally means less flavor. Stick with ground chuck, which, with 15 percent fat, still qualifies as lean. And make sure you pick a package with little "juice" pooled in the Styrofoam tray. "It comes from water in the protein molecules called 'free water,' which is released over time," says Mike De La Zerda, Ph.D., beef-quality manager for the Texas Beef Council. "The more free water that has drained into the package, the less juicy your burgers will be."

  6. No way is it better.

  7. Vegetarian diets and veggie alternatives have many health benefits. It always puzzles me though, if a person turns vegetarian, why do they want to eat veggie products that are altered to look and taste like meat? What ever you do, do not consume large amounts of unfermented soy products. New research conducted by scientists that are not funded by pro-soy organizations is starting to turn up evidence of some pretty bad health effects related to unfermented soy – suppression of thyroid function, inhibition of certain protein pathways and evidence of increase in certain cancers. The Australian Cancer Centre has issued a warning to people undergoing treatment not to eat soy products, as the levels of phyto-estrogen are high enough to make the tumours grow faster than the chemo can kill them. Women are affected by the phyto-estrogen levels in soy and some women are now experiencing a condition know as estrogen overload – which not only manifests as behavior problems, such as aggression, loss of memory and irrational behavior, but is also starting to show in increases in hormone driven cancers – particularly breast cancer. There is a rise in breast cancer in men which relates directly to the increase in soy usage in processed foods and general soy consumption – this may be a coincidental relationship and needs more study. What is also considered anecdotal at the moment is the increase of incidence of pancreatic cancer amongst soy consumers, but there is a strong enough correlation that people should be made aware. This is not a pro-meat promotion. Far from it, it is a pro - vegetarian /anti soy message. Do your own research, find out the truth.

  8. Yeah, veggie burgers are way healthier, but a lot of them are really high in sodium, so you shouldn't eat them too often.

  9. Veggie burgers have less cholesterol and saturated fat.  Check the labels.  You have other options, like ground turkey and ground chicken, too.  I'm not sure what's best.  Just check the labels.

  10. you mean health wise? or taste wise?

health wise, of course veggie/soy is better! any soy alternative is better than meat. less fat ['cept the good kind]. soy is wayy better for you than meat, and it has lots of good stuff :]

personally [i'm veggie] but real burgers taste better. i can't stand the taste of veggie/soy burgers

  11. About the same, except the veggie burger most likely has poly-unsaturated fat which is heart healthy.
