Is Vietnam cheaper than Thailand at the moment?

Yes, infact the quality of lodgings in Vietnam are improving dramatically.  You can stay in a 3 star hotel for less than 20 dollars including descent breakfast in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.

No. Thailand still has many relatively cheap backpacker lodgings.

Frankly, I've never found Vietnam lodgings cheap compared to Cambodia, Laos, or what can be found in Thailand and price/quality ratio is by far the best in Thailand.

You see, a lot of different ideas... Why don't you come to see yourself, that is something more than words. In my opinion, if you are intending to take a shopping tours, it'd better to go to Thailand, for sightseeing interest, you should come to Vietnam.

Vietnam now is much more expensive than in Thailand (food, lodge and every thing). As the inflation in Vietnam is very hight (about 10%/year) and the number of tourists increased rapidly and there is not enough room for them, services for tourists in Vietnam now is more and more expensive.

For example: This year, a 5-star hotel room cost about $100/nite, but next year, it will be $150
