Question:

Is Wal-Mart really doing away with plastic and making customers bring in their own bags?

Two people have told my mother that the reason they are selling the reusable bags is because in a few months they are going to stop using plastic bags altogether. Customers are to bring those bags in, or other bags or boxes, to put their purchase(s) in. I say it's totally bogus, but then again, having worked for them in the past and still knowing people that do, I wouldn't put any idiotic ideas past them. Just for the record, I am not against helping the environment but something like this needs to be addressed and changed gradually. They could look at other options involved with helping the environment than doing something drastic like this.

  1. It's going to take more than some cheap c**p bag from Walmart to make any difference, they need to sell responsible products from responsible makers...not gonna happen there.

  2. I know on earth day April 22 Whole Foods will be making the switch! I have been using my own bags for awhile now- so its not so big of change for me. I can see how it can be a bit much for other people. But I suggest everytime you go shopping, pick up one new shopping bag. Or you can save your old plastic bags, and use those. Not so bad. I almost doubt walmart would do something like that, but if they are, good for them!

  3. I think it's a fantastic idea. Save-a-Lot grocery stores do the same thing -- they keep all of their shipment boxes in the front to use, but aside from that you have to bring your own bags to put your grocery items in. Plastic bags are so wasteful, it's ludicrous that we still use so many of them every day, when it is JUST as easy to throw a couple of canvas bags in the trunk of your car and grab them when you go somewhere.

I haven't heard about Wal-mart making the shift, but if they really are, then KUDOS to them!

  4. I think this should be explored more.  Think of all the bags that won't be going into the landfills.  It would certainly be a giant step forward.

Maybe they are just doing it for Earth Day!

  5. I think thats an awesome idea.

Everystore around us does that, but they haven't totally given up on plastic bags but I think they should and reuse boxes from packaging and stuff. =]

  6. LOL

Too funny, a store that not only is known for dumping dyes and factor waste in our waters and in our earth are going to get rid of plastic bags.  Please, I am sure they will encourage it but they won't make it mandatory for the idiots who shop there.  Walmart abuses and uses child slave labor and takes advantage of women who are starving and needs to feed there family's.  Average walmart factor pays it factor workers 4 cents an hour.

  7. I think it's a great idea.

It is not hard to bring in your own cloth bags.

And many places sell them for a $1 a piece, not too much of a hole in your pocket.

  8. NO.

Why would they do away with bags?  If that's the case then they need to do away with every other piece of plastic in their store.

  9. no, but they now  do have places to RECYCLE YOUR BAGS! it's a miracle.
