Question:

Is Western Syd a plan to attract Pacific Islander players?

Seems that Rugby League is becoming almost exclusively a Pacific Islander sport. As League becomes more marginalized and eventually out muscled by AFL, Soccer and Union it will lose its professional appeal and Islander athletes will have to seek other avenues. Huge communities in Western Sydney. I think the AFL should make it part of their strategy. What do you reckon?

  1. Well there is certainly a bit of an Islander communtiy in Western Sydney and the likes and perhaps this is indeed part of the AFL's plan to try and recruit more players to take over some of the other sports.  As much as you say AFL will outmuscle the other sports I think there will always be a strong base for NRL, although the Super 14 and rugby union is starting to die out a little bit, slowly but surely.  Soccer has grown a lot of popularity since the Socceroos in 2006 so I can't see AFL dominating all of the sports in Australia just yet.

Recruiting more Islanders and players from Fiji and New Zealand and other small islands will definitely help out the game, but currently they are more into league and union right now.  If AFL gets on top though and they start playing AFL from birth it will definitely grow a lot.  It may take 10 years or 20 years though for all of this to properly happen.
