Question:

Is Windows XP still a good choice for an operating system?

I've been looking at buying the new Dell Mini, which comes with Windows XP Service Pack 3. I have some reservations as I'd be taking a step back from Windows Vista, would you say it's worth my while or is it old technology now?

Thanks for your help.

  1. the Dell Mini 9 is a Netbook, and i would actually suggest Linux as better than either XP or Vista.

Vista is the way to go on brand new PC's, but Linux is hte preffered flavour for netbooks, unless XP is only choice or you really dont want to try Linux.

XP loses support next year, but is sitll supproted for Netbooks till at least 2010, with a variety of windows 7(whihc is not due next year, as MS have stated several times) especially for Netbooks releaseing in 2010 wiht Win7 luanch.

However im sure all the Virus writers and Hackers are happy that folks are sticking with XP for a few more years, dont have to learn anyhting new,

  2. Windows xP service pack 3 is latest and it is nice perhaps my suggestion is that you take it because it is good .

  3. A lot of people prefere xp to vista so i would recomend getting the laptop with xp.

  4. its still good, depends on what your using it for though nothing wrong with Vista either though as long as your computer is built right to support it

  5. Windows XP is still good OS. And I would  definetly get it with XP , not with Vista. I got Vista on laptop and  I am sick of it , I simply ask to close down acces 07 , and program isnt responding, and i got 2gb ram, and 1.8 ghz processor. :(

So Yeah go with XP, or if you can try to use Ubuntu, free OS. and very good ;)

  6. As others have said, XP is great and I plan on using it until the new OS comes out in 2009. It seems like Microsoft comes out with a good OS every other release. So, XP good....Vista ok.....next OS good seems to fit the pattern.

  7. I would go with Windows XP. I have had both and I would for sure go back to XP if given the choice! Good Luck!

  8. XP is a very good choice. The only reason people prefer it over Vista is because Vista uses a lot of the computer's power to run. It sucks up RAM and everything else.

  9. XP as it is now is the best you can have, the Vista will not be fully operational with the mainstream software out there for at least another year.

  10. it is worth your while, XP is still pretty great.

Vista With service Pack 1 is a decent operating system, but you will notice some performance decrease on a lower end system

Also Windows 7 is due out in 2009

  11. XP is a step forward from Vista. Go with XP.

  12. Windows Xp would be just fine at this time.  Windows Vista itself isn't much of an upgrade.

While lots of computers run Vista now, the majority of them run Windows Xp still.  That means that software companies still make versions for Windows Xp because it is still a major operating system.

The Dell Mini is a low powered computer (like EEE PC, MSI Wind, Cloudbook) intended for basic tasks like web browsing, email, and productivity software.  If that's the kind of computer you are looking for, it would be a great choice, and Windows Xp would be just fine.

But the Dell Mini will be released with a version of Ubuntu Linux for its operating system as well, which significantly cuts down the price.  I'm very experienced with that operating system, and it works wonderfully for all the basic tasks that the Dell Mini is intended to do.  I'd encourage you to take a look at Ubuntu Linux before you decide to buy the one with Xp, because it may be perfect for you, and save you about a hundred dollars.

That being said, the Dell Mini is competitively priced, and I might look at buying one as well.

If you're looking for a more advanced computer, for gaming or video editing, I'd try Circuit City.  In my experience, they have really good prices.

  13. I definitely think it is worth it. I've heard of many problems people have when trying to operate pc games alone so god knows how many other problems there are. It can be sorted by clicking run as admin i think, but in my opinion it's just not worth all the hassle.

  14. yes xp is the best os in my opinion better then vista as all the programs work on xp

  15. Yes its still the best Windows OS out.

Ignore Vista and when you want to upgrade then go for Windows '7'.
