Is Xanax a nerve pill and a muscle relaxer?

My ear doctor told me he was going to perscribe me a muscle relaxer for my TMJ because it hurt me so bad because the muscle was tightening up but he gave me Xanax. I always thought that was just a nerve pill. Is it also a muscle relaxer?

your dr is an idiot!!! dont take xantax for muscle pain...you need vicoden or flexeral...report that dr...

both, like most benzo's (ativan, valium etc...) they work as a "nerve" pill but also as a muscle relaxer.  just be careful because it can give you bad concentration so no driving or life altering decisions

Xanax is an anti-anxiety drug that does relax spasms.  Take it as your doctor prescribed.  I hope it helps you.  I would suggest acupuncture for your pain, too, to see if it helps you.

It's a benzo which means it has both effects.

it will relax you and maybe even make you sleepy. i guess if you're relaxed it will have the same benefit as a muscle relaxer
