There are two different typea of Xbox Live accounts, Silver and Gold.  Silver accounts let you do pretty much everything (chat with friends, use MSN, download demos) except play online in games, but Silver is free.  Gold has everything silver has  + you can play online but it costs $.  For 13 months of Xbox Live it ranges from $50.00 to $60.00 depending on the store where you buy the 1 year card or if it's on sale for boxing day or something.  For 1 month purchased from Xbox Live it's about $5.00 or for three it's like $25.00.  BTW, do not let the price on Xbox Live turn you to Wii or PS3, because XL is a much more organized system with all the features you would want conveniently built in and it is much more social than any other network.

Silver is free, it allows you to chat and d/l stuff from marketplace

Gold is 7.99 monthly, 19.99 for 3 month, 49.99 for a year

prices are slightly higher if your in Canada, Gold if what you want tho to play games

But if you're signing up for the first time, create your gamertag, and near the end of the sign up process choose silver membership and you'll get the 30 days of xbox live gold for free. You can do this with 3 gamertags per console.

Hi, if you want 12 months free Xbox Live i would use Rewards1 and PriceRebel as they are very good and I have so far revieved $80 worth of Amazon gift cards which is more than enough for an Xbox Live Subscribtion!!!

Sadly you have to pay for it. It is 3.99$ for a month..7.99$ for 3 months I belive and 49.99$ for a year and some games come with a free month and 48 hour trials.Have Fun!

The solver package is but for the gold you have to pay. So, obviously Gold has more features than Silver. Plus, you should already have 1 month Free-trial of Gold.
