Is Yale (New Haven) similar to Boston (Harvard-area)?

My brother is thinking of moving to New Haven but has not been there...I have been to Boston and found it congested and expensive and not very attractive in that sense...

Could someone tell me if New Haven is like Boston in that way? If not how is it different?

  1. i agree with Tom see if he wants to look at Providence which is a short train ride to Boston and not too far from the city or new haven and it has decent culture and no real sketchy areas

  2. You'll find New Haven to be less expensive, and slightly less congested than Boston, but its mass transit is nowhere near that of Boston's, and New Haven simply lacks the culture that Boston has.

While Boston is generally one good neighborhood after another, New Haven is smaller, more run down and much sketchier than Boston.

Living halfway between the two cities, the only place I would even want to go in New Haven is Wooster St. (their little italy), whereas I cant even count the amount of attractions in Boston. Boston is one of the most attractive cities of New England. If you two don't even like Boston, then this may not be the right region for you.

I would definitely tell him to check out New Haven for himself (and make sure he has a car to get around) before he makes a commitment to move there. It doesn't even compare to Boston in my book.

  3. i went down to new haven around 3 years ago for basketball and i ahted it. yale was nice but everything else wasnt that great. i would tell him to go down for a day or two and look around to see if its the right fit
