I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and just my ill luck that my allergy season has started , since I am pregnant I am very skeptical on taking any meds. So far I have taken no medicine but this allergy is driving me insane. I am asking about Zyrtec specifically because this is the only allergy medicine that i has worked on me in the past...Has anyone else taken Zyrtec while being pregnant ? Is it Safe ?

  1. I just saw my Doctor a few weeks ago and she said that she would not recommend Zyrtec. She said to take Claritin. I actually have been suffering with bad allergies lately. I usually only get them for a day or so and then won't get them again for a few weeks.  I would suggest you talk with your Doctor and be sure.

    Good luck!

  2. My OBGYN said it isn't approved for use during pregnancy so he said not to take it.

  3. i take zyrtec or claritin....both work for me and my dr. says it is completely fine.   if you don't take it and you have severe allergies, you could develop a sinus infection and end up on antibiotics.

  4. your best thing to do is to go see your doctor and see if its okay for you to take that medicine and tell he or she that your allergies are driving you insane

  5. Yes it is ok...unofficially. There is no evidence to support it either way. Therefore, if an alternative is available, it is recommended to try the better alternative first.

It is ADEC category B2. This means there is no evidence to support its use in pregnancy...however there is no evidence to show that it shouldnt be used either. It is actually sometimes used to treat cholestasis in pregnancy

For allergies and hayfever in pregnancy it is recomended that you use non-sedating forms of antihistamines though, such as polaramine and avil. These have the most evidence supporting them in pregnancy, and are ADEC category A (the best category for pregnancy)

If you don't have those brands in your country, you will have to ask your pharmacist which ones they have that are safe
