I just got five small goldfish (the biggest about 1 1/2 inches long, the smallest 3/4). Is my 1-gallon bowl too small for them?

  1. WOW. One gallon is barely enough for one fish let alone five...let alone goldfish who p**p like crazy.  They will die very very quickly in a one gallon. Try at least 20 gallons and even that might be pushing it. They p**p a lot and make the ammonia skyrocket.

  2. Waaayyy too small. You'll probably need a 55 gallon tank for these guys, plus some major filtration.

  3. AHEM, yes it's ABSOLUTELY TOOO SMALL

not even for a single betta it's enough

you say you have 5 goldfish, well this is the rule

20 gallon tank for 1 single goldfish, and another 10 gallon for each addional goldfish you add

so we're talking about a 60 gallon tank beeing bare minimum for 5 goldfish

    also a FILTER is NEEDED

  4. absolutely definately way too small!!

One goldfish needs 20 gallons of water, then 10 gallons for each additional fish.....unfortunately they won't last 5 minutes in a bowl that size....sorry.

  5. No, there is not enough oxygen.  And they are among the dirtiest of fish, and their waste will poison them.  These small goldfish you have are probably comet goldfish, and can grow to upwards of 6 inches long.  (if they make it that long.)

  6. I'd say yes

  7. NO... if they're Fancy's (doubt it) they need a 70 gallon tnak MINIMUM with a really good filter and bubbler, if theyre commons or commets (fedder goldfish) hen they need 250 gallons with a really good filter and bubler MINIMUM... sorry, but a bowl is inadeqete for ANY fish, goldfish , betta, guppie you name it, a bowl isnt good.

  8. you would need a 55 gallon tank or more long term. To keep them in that size bowl is torture.

  9. A 1 gallon is too small for a single goldfish, let alone five. Goldfish get very large, and that many will probably need at least a 50 gallon, eventually. And you should always have a filter and heater for your fish, which I expect that your bowl doesn't have. I advise that you take them back to the petstore or upgrade, quickly.

  10. The rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon. Your bowl is way too small for 5 goldfish.

You'll be changing the water constantly and what happens when they grow?

One goldfish in a gallon bowl would be okay for awhile, but not more than that.

  11. yea theyll be fine i have 6 in a bowl and there fine you just gotta change the water once a week

  12. Nope they would be way over crowded, I would recommend at least a ten gallon for them so they have room to roam.

  13. You need to read a fish book or some reliable web sites before you get any fish so you can get some basic knowledge about them.  You can't fit any fish in a 1 gallon bowl, much less 5 goldfish!  Try using it for goldfish crackers or swedish fish instead.   Goldfish grow very large and need major filtering, they need 20 gallons for 1 and an additional 10 gallons for each goldfish you add after that.  If you want a smaller setup get a 5 gallon with one betta or 10 gallon with some small tropical community fish.

  14. i'm sorry to say NO that bowl is definitly not big enough for your FIVE fish even though they are gold fish. i had three gold fish and i got this big tank for them (like a lobster tank almost) and my fish loved being able to swim all around! they ended up dieing because when i went on vacation my friend over feed them....yeah sad....Careful who you trust to take care of your fish if you go on vacation.   GOOD LUCK!  ^^

  15. NO NO NO NO

not if u want them to die

the rule of thumb is per every inch of fish at its full grown size should have a gallon of water

i.e. a goldfish gets about 6 inches so one goldfish should have 6 gallons

not to mention goldfish need filters too

the only thing that will be happy and healthy in a fish bowl is a betta fish (siamese fighting fish) and they are very pretty

  16. no way as they will end up dying on there c**p and will get too big for it. I say get  a 45 gallon atleast as goldfish need room to swim and get big.

  17. yup too small without aeration and filter its not a good idea.

  18. it is WAY too small for them

enough if they are quite small,

with proper care they will grow MUCH bigger I would get a 15 gallon AT LEAST for them

usually it is 10- 20 gallons for ONE goldfish

and because they excrete VERY much,

and it is a BOWL (never put goldfish in a bowl, no air and also you need a filter)

it would be like you and 4 other humans living in a closet! with no air

if you cant get a 15 -20 gallon tank, then get a betta!

since you have already gotten them, you could return them or get a larger tank

please do some research before you get fish

and dont make them be cooped up in such a small place :)

  19. Barely big enough for one.  Five - no way.  I have 3 in a 30 gallon tank and wouldn't add anymore.  One gallon is too small for anything but the smallest one.
