Is a 1000w amp too big for a set of 2 10" subs?

Well you didnt specify the RMS of those subwoofers. You need more information. Also, turning down the gain isnt like a volume k**b, it is to match the output of your deck to prevent clipping. If you state the RMS and the specs of the amo you will get more help.

depends on the amp... there are a lot of "1000W" amps out there that are only putting out a couple hundred watts.  You also need to look at the RMS power.

You could always turn the gain down though if its too much.
