We live in the south and have the AC on during the summer. I have tried REALLY hard to save money on our power bill. Is this a decent power bill? Some tips to keep it lower, would be nice too.

  1. Seems high to me.

I am in the south and my power bill is about 60.00 - 80.00 during the summer. I've never had one over 100.

My house is 1300 sf. It is only about 10 years old so it is well insulated. This would have a big effect on your power bill. I keep the thermostat at 79. If I'm working in the house (like cleaning) I'll take it down to 76 since I'm moving around a lot. I have ceiling fans in the den and bedrooms.

Things to do to keep it lower:

If your ac has not been serviced in a while - get it serviced. This can help.

Change the filter for your ac once a month.

Set your thermostat higher. If you don't have a programmable thermostat - get one. Well worth the money. You can set it to go up when everyone is at work and cool down when folks are likely to be home.

    Wash cloths with cold water.

Don't use the dryer as an iron. If it's wrinkled - iron it. Don't throw it in the dryer.

Take short showers. If you have an electric hot water heater -- it costs money to heat the water. The less hot water you use, the better.

    Don't leave lights on.

Don't stand in front of the fridge with the door open trying to decide what you want to eat. There is a reason your mom got mad when you did this.
