Is a 1580 a good score for the new sat?

I took the sat This june and I scored a 480 in math 560 in writing and 580 in critical reading and i got a seven on the essay. First of all, How is the essay graded, is a 7 good? and I want to go to either NYU, BU, Northeastern, or Umass Amherst, so does a 1580 cut it. I am planning to take the test again, especially since i forgot my calculator and i didnt have enough time to do the math in my head so i missed alot of the math section and therefore scored alot lower than i would have had i brought a calculator.

i got a 1590 and got into 7 out of 8 schools i applied to. Depending on your school grades and extra circulars you can get into all of them, but may not get a high scholarship

First of all, a lot of schools don't look at writing too seriously because there is simply not enough data to put scores against.

The essay is graded on a twelve point scale.

I hate to say it, but according to the college board, your scores are too low for NYU (they are looking for a range of 620-710 for all three tests), BU (580-680), and Northeastern (570-680, excluding writing).

With your current scores your best bet is UMass Amherst (510-630, excluding writing), but if you had a better score at math, it would help you tremendously.

Your score of 1580 is better than average. The average on the SAT exam is 1500. Thus, you were 80 pts above average. Although your score was above average, it is not a great score. If you are planning on getting into the more competitive UC schools such as Berkeley and UCLA, you mus get a higher score. I highly recommend using Tutorfox. Tutorfox.com sells its guide for only 10 dollars, and it written by two students who scored a 2400 and a 2350 on the exam. Let me know if you need any more help and/or info. With a bit more studying your score will sky rocket...so get to it.

I think you have a decent shot at getting into those schools, but you should study to ensure that you get in...
