Is a 1700 a good score on the SAT for the first time?

I took it for the first time in June, and I don't know if it is that good. Will it prevent me from getting into a good college. I've had some Ivy League schools send me letters and Harvard even sent me an application.

  1. If you're a freshman it's not a bad start. If you're a junior, forget the ivies.

  2. For your first time testing, no that is not bad. But you may want to take the SAT's again, hopefully boosting up your score. I would also recommend taking some more practice tests just to be safe. You should also focus on studying for the subjects that you may have not done so well on, again increasing your chances for a better score.

  3. 1700 is better than average, but it's not outstanding, and it's very low for Ivy League schools, which typically only admit students with SAT scores that are around 2200 (and still reject some applicants with perfect scores).  An SAT score won't necessarily be the deciding factor that prevents you from getting into a school, but 1700 certainly won't help your case; you'd have to be the national champion of something in order to overcome that.

By the way, once you've taken a standardized test score like the SAT and subscribed to the student search service, which you probably did, all the Ivy League schools and other schools send out materials and even applications to everyone who provides contact information (address, email, etc.) because they want more people to apply to their schools.  If more people apply, they get to reject more people, and their percentage of acceptance goes down, which increases their rankings.  Also, theoretically, if more people apply, they get more students to choose from and have more people to pick from to have the strongest incoming class.  So don't think that because Harvard sent you an application, you could get in; Harvard sends that thing to pretty much everybody it can get an address for.

  4. 1700 is not bad for the first time. to be honest, however, it probably wont up your chances of getting into a competitive school like an Ivy.

i would recommend taking many practice tests to get familiar w.the material and to improve your score. maybe a class would work too; but i would definitely try the practice thing if i were you.

    best of luck:)
