Question:

Is a 178 cm ski too long for a 175 lb, 6 foot 1 intermediate?

My girlfriend has bought me a pair of new 178 cm Rossignol Viper (06/07) shaped skis with Axium 110 bindings. I normally rent skis (from the prestige ranges) in around 172-174cm. Are these skis too long? Should I try to swap them for 170s?

I'm 175lb, 6 foot 1 and good intermediate skill (I'm happiest skiing blacks and reds at a good pace and I'm comfortable in icy conditions). This year I'd like to improve my technique in moguls and put down some cruising mileage.

Thanks!

  1. Depending on the slopes you ski, they are about the longest I'd recommend for your ability and size, You will get used to the quickly, but the length is stable and a secure feeling for you will help you to learn.

The longer length is also good for cruising at medium to higher speeds.

  2. Those skis will be a little tough at first but take it easy and you will be OK.   Once you get confident with the size you will be able to crank on them.

One tip is that you may want to rent some skis that are 10-20 cm  shorter than normal to learn how to ski moguls.  The smaller size will make you concentrate on keeping your weight centered which is paramount to learning how to ski the bumps.  Once you get the basics you can switch back to normal sized skis and feel more confident.

  3. They should be good for you, I'm 5ft 2in and ski on 180's and have no problems

  4. Sounds fine.  You'll want the extra length as you progress.

  5. Those should be fine. I am a little shorter, expert skier, on 181's.

You should grow into them as your skills progress. The only concern is that you can control them right now. If so...and I don't see why you wouldn't be able to...you should be just fine. Stick to the cruisers until you get them down, then try some crud and a few bumps.
