Is a 1972 S mint penny worth anything?

Was searching through my change for any raritys and was looking through pennies. I know 1972 have the double struck error. This one doesn't but has the realatvly rare S mint. is it worth anything. Im not a coin collector so I really dont know. thanks

  1. Circulation coins with the S mint mark started to show up in 1968 to 1974. In 1975 the S mint marked coins went back to being made in proof only for proof sets. The S standards for San Francisco alright but in 1955 The San Francisco mint was renamed an Assay office and was not made a mint again to 1980. So the S on your coin is actually a assay office mark not a mint mark. Here we have a very historical coin but one that has no monetary value unless in high mint state.  


  2. If it is something you got from circulation then it has no extra value beyond face. It would have to be a high grade mint state coin to have any real extra value. However some youngster who is just starting to collect coins might think it is pretty cool. After all it is 36 years old which might be older than Mom & Dad.
