  1. more than just the capacity, but also the gear ratios and the fashion in which it is driven. Here though is an example - both by FIAT. An x1/9, 1.3 litre petrol gets at best 7 to 8 L per 100 km. On the other hand, the Diesel Punto with a 1.9 litre engine is claimed to return 4.5 L per 100 km. However, the x1/9 is a 4 speed, the Punto is a 6 speed. Also factor in weight of vehicle, rolling radius of wheels and tyres. Then go out and buy a motorcycle, faster and more economical than both. LOL

  2. no, a 3 litre will use more fuel

  3. Yeah, near as dammit.

Unless it's some worn out old nail of a diesel.

  4. It depends on lots of things.  The type of cars, type of diesel engine, age of cars, your style of driving, etc.  Look up the official fuel consumption figures for the cars you're considering and that will give you the best comparisons.

  5. Depends on which cars exactly. In general, I think the diesel will be lower. From a good 3 litre diesel, like the Audi 3.0 TDI (A4 / A3) you can expect about 8 litre /100km combined driving. That is difficult for even a 1.8 litre petrol to match. If you find the units strange, bear with it - it is about the relative figures..

  6. All cars are different in their fuel efficiencies (engine efficiency, weight of vehicle etc), this is not a straightforward question.  "What Car" is an excellent place to find comparative information.  However as a rule of thumb this does seem to be a fair approximation.

For example it shows that the diesel Audi A8 3.0 TDI Quattro does an average of 33.6mpg (town/out-of-town).  The petrol Chevrolet Tacuma MPV 2.0 CDX  averages 32.8mpg.

The diesel Ford Ranger Pick-up 3.0TDCi 4x4 turns in 30.7mpg, but it is bigger and heavier than the other two vehicles.
