  1. I take deer with a Model 99 in .300 Savage every year. At ordinary (ie, 250 yds or less) ranges it is a GREAT rifle/cartridge combination. Mine rifle has been around since the mid-40's and shoots inch to inch and a half groups consistently at 100 yds with factory ammo.

For whitetail I use 150gr bullets. If I'm out for elk, 180gr. I find the Remington Express ammo seems to get along really well with the rifle, although I've also used Federal ammo.

Only disadvantage to the .300 Savage is that factory ammo is getting harder to find, and more expensive (I think it depends where in the country you are... still (apparently) lots available in the east, but out here in the west not so much). If you reload, then you've got no worries.

I've begin reloading my own, and a Hornady 150gr with 39-40gr of Varget powder is VERY accurate and gets equal or better velocity to the factory loads with no pressure issues.

    Good cartridge, enjoy!
