I fish at a somewhat small lake. I've heard of people pulling 10-15lb catfish out of this lake.

Is a 4/0 circle hook too big for a catfish? I really don't want to limit myself to huge catfish only.

  1. no, not at all it's fine. Go for it.

  2. You could use it but i would use a 2/0 that way you can also hook the smaller ones and any other species of fish that may take your bait such as carp.

  3. Well. No hook is really too big for a catfish. Eventually one big enough will find your bait and swallow it. But keep in mind that when using circle hooks you need to use a few sizes larger than what you would use in a j style hook. So if you used a 4/0 circle hook it would be like using a 2/0 j style. I typically like to use a 6/0 circle hook. Eagle claw makes them in a silver finish. I believe the finish is chrome. The hooks are small enough to fit in the mouth of an average size catfish (5 lbs) but strong enough to handle a real brute. They are sold in a pack of 50 and can be bought at your local Wal-Mart.

  4. Go ahead and use it. You won't be limiting yourself to huge fish unless you use huge baits on the hook. I personally like the 2/0 circle hooks, it seems to be a good all around size. To be honest, one can never tell what size fish is going to try and eat your bait. Good luck!

  5. I might drop down 1 size considering its a circle hook...That is if you are using a good brand that one get straightened out on you.

Personally I like a smaller circle hook. I can catch the little ones that steal my bait sometimes and use them for bait for that big cat.

  6. That may be a bit large if you want to catch all sizes. I usually used a #8 to # 1 treble hook.
