Question:

Is a 500cc Honda Shadow an acceptable and safe first bike?

I'm a 5'8", approximately 145 lb. female and this bike feels kind of heavy. I also tipped it very quickly and had a hard time picking it up. However, a friend about my size, weight and experience level rode it safely and happily. Should I be scared of this bike? I am definitely worried about safety and riding ease. Are there benefits as far as stability or safety to a 500cc as opposed to a smaller bike?

  1. You have the benefit of  more power  to get you out of hazardous situations as well as added visibility.

There is a technique for picking up a motorcycle by planting your tail on the seat and walking it up.

  2. Given it is a cruiser style, it should be easier than a racer.

Good choice.  A better choice would have been a smaller and lighter 250cc beginner bike.  Don't ignore the dangers of learning and riding.

    Good Luck...

  3. That's actually a very good bike for a beginner.  Maybe a little on the big side, but not much.

  4. excellent choice...

    reliable, comfy, easy to ride....

    pull the trigger

  5. No, I find v-twin cruiser type bikes to handle badly.,  They rake the front end out for a certain 'look' .  This makes it hard to turn.  My wife had a 750 Vulcan and almost quit riding until she drove a in-line 4.   I would look for a 650-750cc Honda Nighthawk. There are a millon around and easy and cheap lots of power great handling.  Any 4 cylinder Japanese bike will do nicely.  Buy a used one.  Ride it for a couple years and then soak 10k into something you know you want.

  6. That's about as friendly of a bike as you'll find other than it's a bit heavier than a 250. Practice and keep aware and you'll be fine.

  7. Any bike is only as safe as the rider. Wear good quality protective clothing. Try a few different types of bikes out. If it's acceptable to you then that's the main thing. Have fun!

  8. thats perfect, my ex which was about your size started off on a Harley Sportster 883 and she was fine once she got use to it
