I am looking at purchasing a surfboard with the measurements 6'10"x 20 1/2 x 2 5/8 that has a funboard shape. Is this is a decent board for me (a 6 foot - 80kg guy) to learn on??? Thanks in advance!

  1. As a general rule bigger = better for learning.  Go read some of the already answered question on this question, it gets asked like every day.

  2. No its not a good size to learn on. You should go to a surf school and check out the boards they typically use. A good board to learn on would be a malibu -like 10 foot or longer. The board you describe sounds like a big wave short board that is commonly used by guys who to Indonesia for surf trips or fat old guys. I have one with the same dimensions that I took to Indo and I weigh 90kg. I don't agree that 80kg is heavey-I'm not over weight its just that I have heavey bones. Light people suck:)

  3. i would definetly go with something thats about 8' to 10'. like a longboard or a malibu. they are good to learn on and its probably a good size for you. now if you really want to have your question answered correctly, go to a surfshop and talk the the guys there. they will get you a right size board and they and the right board for your skill level and your experience of surfing and what you are looking for when surfing. i hope this helps. have fun surfing!

  4. I really want to give you some good advice, but it seems like you haven't taken the time to read any of the older questions and answers. It is really foolish to specify exact surfboard sizes or styles to anybody on-line. That advice is best gained by going to a good local surf shop and talking to the folks there about what you want to do, and what you expect out of surfing.

First of all, lessons are the absolute best way to go, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of friends who surf who can teach you. Secondly, don't BUY a board to learn on. Rent a board to learn on (if you take lessons, they provide the board). That way, if you decide you really don't like surfing, you aren't stuck with an expensive surfboard that you don't want any. When you do get the hang of the basics, talk to the folks in your local shop. Explain that you are a beginner. They will find the right board for your weight (your height really doesn't make any difference), local wave conditions and your budget.

PS  175 lbs isn't all THAT big. I weigh 215 (but I'm 56 years old). Good luck surfing!

  5. Buy a 9'0 longboard you will learn much faster.

  6. Isn't 80kg pretty heavy? No offense... Anyhow, since you are on the heavier side, I'd suggest a much longer board so that it has more floatation and you can learn more easily. I was probably around ninety pounds when i first learned to surf and I still used an 8'0 board.

  7. You weigh 175 lbs. The board is wide and thick, but I think it may be difficult for you to learn on. Something over 8 feet would be better for a beginner. Go talk to the guys at your local surf shop. Ask them what they recommend for a beginner of your weight and what's appropriate for your local break. It sounds like a nice funboard size, but maybe for a lighter person.
