  1. A lot depends on a quality and size of your TV/Display, as well as watching distance.

If your TV is at least 1080i  (better yet 1080p) resolution, and your watching distance < 2.5 x screen size = it is well worth it!  Picture is great, regular DVDs look great (at least on my PS3 and Toshiba HD-A35).

  2. Oh my god what a obvious question.  It is so great.  Way better that dvd.  On a HDTV dvds don't look good unless you have a blu-ray player because they upconvert them to near HD quality.  They have 1080p HD which is the best.  DVD is only 480p.  You will need a HDMI cable which they might give to you free.  Get the ps3.  You see it has blu-ray built into it unlike 360 which supports only HDDVD which has completely lost the war because it doesn't look as good or have as much memory.  blu-ray has 25 gb of information on it on a single layer disk.  And sony is coming out with a 4 layer disk with 125 gb of info.  DVD has 5 gb.  Blu-ray players will cost you about 600.00.  ps3 is 399.99.   And it has blu-ray and much more.  You will love it.  And make sure you get a 1080p HDTV for the best hi-def experience.
