  1. Well since in India the ability to speak English well is a sign of prestige, naturally a degree is worth even more.  Historically the British conquerors of India allied themselves with Ksatriya (Shatriya) caste, the second and ruling elite caste of India.  When the Brits first attacked India, the truth is they were repulsed, and were forced to stay along the coasts where with their navy, they were able to negate the superior numerical advantage of the Indians.

Through spies, local Indians, they discovered a rivalry between factions among the Shatriyas, and in a typical "divide and conquer" manner, they exploited it, and before you knew it they conquered the whole of the south.  Later on they made inroads into the north, and they made a juggernaut advanced until they were stopped dead in their tracks by Sikh warriors, the great majority also members of the Shatriya caste.

The Sikhs dealt the Brits defeat after humiliating defeat because, see, India had enormous wealth prior to the British invasion, and even though it did not have creative inventive minds, they were, nevertheless, not stupid.  That is to say, they purchased, I believe, guns from America, from none other than smith and wesson and the like, cannons from Germany long story short, they were well equiped, well trained from a lifetime of training in the "warrior arts," and armed to the teeth.  Even though the British had superior numbers because they used a lot of soldiers from southern India, many were poorly trained, and since a year in the army does not compare with a lifetime of soldier training, Sikh warriors made mince meat of the Brits.

Until a Sikh traitor, having been promised power by the British, exposed their position at a crucial battle that, had the British lost it, they would have been forced to leave India.  Naturally as history shows the battle was won, and despite the tactical edge given through treachery for the British it was still a Pyrrhic victory because the Sikhs inflicted catastrophic losses.  Not terrible; catastrophic.

In the end though, the Sikh traitor and his family was given wealth and power, and ever since then the association between English and the "high caste" has existed in India, that is why even a low caste Hindu who speaks English will be highly regarded even if he or she is "just a merchant."  It stands to reason, that if the language is a sign of prestige then, naturally the degree is worth a lot, there is a lot of history behind it, too much to explain it all here, and finally, it is probably rooted in that.

Ironically enough though, even though English is associated with the higher castes, most Indians who speak it or obtain degrees from England tended to be middle caste, from upper to lower, always in that range.  Very rarely did Sikhs travel to England to obtain an education there as, having been educated in Vedic Maths and Sciences, and literature, the great majority of Shatriya's do not have a very high opinion of western education.  A few have obtained doctorates and all that, but not many.

Do not forget that India is the country where most of Calculus was invented, and the language, namely Sanskrit, is a highly complex one with more nuances and what not than any western dialect.  That generally means, that to be an educated Shatriaya is roughly the equivalent of, oh...

I would say 2 bachelors, 3 masters and a doctorate.

In other words its insanely tough, and even Sikhs or other Shatriyas educated in the west, will bow with respect to any member of their caste that received a classical Indian education which many traditionalists in India still stubornly feel is superior to anything you can get in the west.  I only skimmed through the Indian history books I eyed at the library of the University of Idaho; I'd have to get deeper into that, but I DO know for sure, that a classical Indian education is not for everyone.

Hence the respect many Sikhs have for those who manage to complete it.

Lastly, I know for a fact, that a classical Indian education involves actually memorizing everything, to the point where you are able to do EVERYTHING in your mind.  In fact, it was from Indian vedic maths writting, that Sir Isaac Newton got the idea of "if you can't do it in your head, then you do not know mathematics."

Newton stated, you had to know it all, and be able to work with numbers to the highest Algebra, entirely in your head.  I know he got that idea from India.

sorry I could not be of better help; you'll have to read more about the history of India and if at all possible the connection between the Shatriyas and the British.
