I have two horses I need to bring from NJ to PA and was wondering if they need a test. If so how long does it take to get results back?

  1. Yes, You always need their registration (if they are) and coggins. I dont' know where you are going (another barn of a show) but you would need it for that too. Actually every animal is suppossed to have type of vet record in a car.  Even dogs and cats.

  2. Yes, its the law. It usually takes 1 to 2 weeks to get the paperwork back.

  3. Yes a coggins test, will be needed. It depends on how long ago your last coggins test was too. Some places require one within the past year, some shorter. You will also need a vet certificate if you are traveling between states.  I'm sure it depends on how fast your vet operates, but for me it takes less than a week to get the results back for coggins.

  4. It simpley depends on where you are. Be safe and get tested

  5. Yes, you normally are required to have a negative coggins test with paperwork for each horse to transport to most states.

I believe it takes a week, give or take. The vet can put a rush on it, if you need it sooner.

  6. Yes proof of a negative coggins test is required in most states to transport horses.  You can expect it to take as long as 2-3 weeks to get the results back once the vet draws the blood so you should plan ahead.

The vet must identify the animal by drawing a chart of any unique markings or scars.  Then he draws a vial of blood which must be sent off to a lab for testing.  Then, if the test is negative, the vet will recieve proof of the negative test and send it to you.  This proof is what you need to travel with your horse.  It is a copy of the vet's drawing of your horses' markings, noting his breed, age, color and unique markings, brands, or scars,  A positive test will result in your horse being quarntined separate from any other equine or euthanized.

  7. I have travelled with my horses all over the U.S. and Canada, each Country and Province and State has their own rules and regulations regarding the transportation of horses.  It would be best to call your vet and ask them what the rules are for the States that you will be travelling through.  Some states insist on you carrying your coggins papers with you at all times, others are not so strict.

Taking the coggins is not a big deal, and it does not take all that long to get the results back, you can always as for a rush, but give it a week at least.

  8. yes you should never ever ever move a horse without a coggins test.... I live in Pa, this is something that makes me nervous going places with my guy with people who dont test. i dont want my horse to die because someone else has a horse that has coggins i know its very rare but it happens!

you can sometimes get a 24 hour rush on a coggins its a bit more expensive. my vet did that for me when i got mine thisyear he faxed it to me at my work and then mailed me the original copy a week later. Usually it takes about a week to get the results

  9. You usually have to have one to be able to transport your horses. You need to have the papers with you too. It won't take too long but you can ask your vet for a rush. You might also want to ask your vet about what is required in the states you are traveling through. I hope I helped!
