Question:

Is a DOT certified/approved helmet safe?

I know nothing about motorcycle helmets. I want a safe one, that will hold up in case of an accident. I found some online for about $60, which is cheap compared to other ones I found. It says they are DOT certified, so does that mean they are safe and good protection? Thanks.

  1. As safe as a helmet can be.  Just make sure you get the DOT (Dept of Transportation)  helmet for what you are riding.  You don't want to have a bicycle helmet if you're on a motorcycle.  I would go to a store like a Harley dealership to get fitted for one.   Different helmets and sizes fit differently.   You can always right down the name and size of one that fits well and then look to find it cheaper online.

  2. Yes, DOT is the Department of Transportation. The helmet had to pass a series of tests to be labeled DOT safe.

  3. A DOT approved helmet is safe, and has to pass a series of tests.  Another test is the SNELL, which is racing approved and the tests are stricter. Any helmet will be alot safer that just your hear to the pavement.

One thing about buying a helmet online though, the helmet must fit you properly and you have no way to try it on. if its too tight or has pinch spots you wont want to wear it. If its too big/loose it may move on your head, therefore limmiting is ability to protect you. it should be snug but not tight.

$60 sounds cheap and if it fits properly, okay, but remember this, HOW MUCH DO YOU VALUE YOUR HEAD?

  4. Well it's better than going without a helmet, but remember you get what you pay for. You don't want a helmet that barely passed the DOT tests.

  5. A lot of helmets are DOT approved, it doesn't really mean much.  If safety is truly your concern, not looks, you will want to find a full face or modular helmet that is SNELL approved. SNELL approval will come on top of DOT approval, and I believe the helmet has to be some sort of full face to pass their test.

  6. As long as it is a true DOT approved helmet because I have seen alot of knock offs that just have the DOT label and they are not DOT approved........

  7. You only get what you payed for think about it your life depends on it.
