  1. no its not as calm and fun to play with

  2. If you're gonna get a snake, a Garter snake is a good choice. They stay relatively small, are non-poisonous, and due to these two facts, they are not very dangerous (when compared to other snakes you can get as a pet).

  3. good snake for first time keeper http://www.gartersnake.co.uk/

  4. Non-Fiction is often more entertaining that fiction.  Years ago, my next door neighbor, being a timid woman, decided the best pet for her teen son was a garter snake (I suggested a Ball Pyton).

Months later, the pencil thin snake became larger.

Long story short - she called me in a panic, and asked how to remove the snake from his finger.  It was busy trying to swallow his finger!!!

When I arrived, it had successfully swallowed most of his finger (Sigh... what a mess for all of us that day was).

"Owning a garter snake is a wuss thing" is just a stupid sentiment, and made by folks who never owned one!

But, to answer your question - yes, they make good pets.  They tend to be voracious and aggressive eaters, though.  Be sure you research the snake, and meet its dietary/growth requirements.  They will readily eat anything slower than they are (tadpoles, frogs, salamanders, earthworms, insects, etc.)

Snakes have very tiny brains, and tend to "act first, and question later."  (It's hard to undo countless centuries of instinct.)  So, if its not ice cold, and of size... they may mistake it for prey (fingers are not an acception).

I can't stress enough, question after question: BE INFORMED.  DO your homework.  Google the animal.  Ask around.  Consult your vet!

Learn about the animal BEFORE you incorporate it into your home.

It's a very broad statement, but basically a very true one: "There are no BAD ANIMALS; only BAD owners."  (There ARE exception to EVERY rule, though!)

I'd love to just type over and over again "It's all cool: go for it."  But I simply can't give that advice.

All babies grow up, and 'teenage'/adult animals can become problematic if their needs aren't met.  Research the animal not only as a juvenile, but as an adult.  Know what you're getting into, before you get it, and be prepared for the changes the animal is likely to undergo.

If you are informed/prepared; years of happiness await you and your long lived reptile.

I hope this has NOT been discouraging, but instead has been of help.
