Is a HMV gift card a great birthday present?

Question

i want to buy a present for my friend. But i don't know what she wants other than jewelry, clothes and CD. her style are different than mine and i would want to buy something that she will never wear. So i though about 2 things:

1-gift card from HMV of 35$

2- gift card from HMV of 25$ AND gift card from Ardène of 10$

That was the only thing that i could think of as a present. Is there a better present or i should pick one of my ideas

Whenever i give a gift card, i always make sure to make a card, or some other item, because gift cards are quite impersonal (about a step up from giving cold hard cash =P).

I would go with the first option (theres lots of selection at HMV), and make a homemade card.
