What kind of riding do you plan to do? What is your budget? There are so many great bike companies out there. For quality yet not expensive bikes there are several I like. Kona is one, check their site and look for models like the Kona Dew and Kona Jake. These are nice hardtails with decent components and a safe frame.

Marin is another company that makes some good bikes at the lower end.

Tell your local shop what your budget is and what kind of riding you want to do. Often in shops the "deals" are not on the bike itself but in service. Lifetime adjustments, discounts on tools and supplies etc. And of course discounts on your helmet. Get one!!

Your local bike shop may have deals on trade ins, used, rental fleet, end of model year.

Many areas have bike swaps, ask at your local shop. These are bike-specific swap meets with flea market pricing but none of the bad karma that come sometimes from Craigs.

Yes, it's a good bike but it depends on what you are going to use it for. I wouldn't recommend a low end model Mongoose bike for serious mountain biking but for commuting or paved trails use they are okay.  I use a 11 year old Mongoose DX 3.3 for my errands and commute to work. All I did was change the wheels, tires and grips everything else is stock. If it gets stolen It won't hurt that much. Also since the bike is so old and cheap I don't have to worry about it getting scratched or damaged. I just drop it on the floor or lock it against anything no worries at all for me. I have friends who spend lots of $$$ on their rides and gear. I outride them all the time even on my cheapy Mongoose. Don't fall for that hype.  It's not the bike it's the rider.

are you refering to bikes from target/walmart? yes, they are terrible and heavy bikes but very popular due to how cheap they are.

just remember, you get what you pay for. if you want a higher quality bike for slightly more money, visit your local bike store to see any budget bikes.  they also give you lifetime maintenance and provide great services.

You're better off buying a Jamis or even a Schwinn from a real bike shop. The other option would be to purchase a better quality used bike from a bike shop, a pawn shop or off of Craigslist.

What are you wanting to use the bike for? MTB, BMX, Road? I am new to biking (MTB) and almost bought a Mongoose, however I saved a little more money and purchased a TREK 4300 & love it.  I think if you are riding only in a subdivision and you know how to tune up or work on bikes then a Mongoose will be ok.  I do not know anything about working or tuning up bikes, fortunately my Local Bike Shop will work on the bike for free for one year(most LBSs will offer this) and that alone is worth its weight in gold, because I am hard on my bike!!!
