Question:

Is a No-Bake Cookie a healthy breakfast choice?

My 4 yr old says it's good for you because it has peanut butter and oatmeal like her granola bars we make. I say it's not because of the sugar and cocoa.

I told her I'd ask some other moms and dads out there, so what are your thoughts?

(she is patiently waiting by the plate of cookies)

  1. It is good for an evening snack Maybe one or two but not for breakfast. It's also good for a quickie breakfast but not an everyday thing. She should have fruits and cereal. Hope this helps

  2. sounds good to me

    those are some healthy ingredients..

    go for it!!

  3. It sounds good, you should just have some fruits on the side along with it.

  4. More than likely they are fine. The Cocoa is not the problem it's sugar ~ BUT main stream cold cereals had tons & usually less protien to balance them than Peanut Butter in this cookie. Also Granola is high in sugar.

  5. No it's really not, the sugar content is very high (cocoa by itself has no sugar).....

  6. It doesn't contain any more sugar than cereals like Fruit Loops, etc that are geared towards kids.  By eating the no-bake cookies you at least KNOW she is getting some nutrition by way of the peanut butter and oatmeal.  Just have her eat them with a glass of milk and some fruit.

  7. Like others have said, it's not the best choice, but it could be worse.

With the amount of sugar, she will be buzzing around with energy for a while in the early morning but will crash and crash hard well before lunch. If she eats the cookies for breakfast, I'd suggest you pack her some extra food in her lunch or give her a snack to have (like carrot sticks) mid-morning. She's going to need it.

  8. it depends on what you're comparing it to.  better than a bowl of cheerios and a banana on top? no.  better than a stack of french toast covered in syrup? probably.

if the granola bars she usually eats are loaded with sugar, fat, and chocolate then she has a point.  if her granola bars are a low sugar, low fat version then she's got nothing.

personally, i would not feed my kids no-bake cookies for breakfast.  whether they are like the granola bars or not, mom gets veto power.  if you say it's not breakfast, it's not breakfast.

  9. I tend to agree with your daughter.  There are way worse choices than those.  The peanut butter has protein and the oatmeal is a plus.  People drink cocoa all the time, but instead she can eat it.

There is tons of sugar in breakfast cereal.

I would however let her have only 2 cookies plus a glass of soy milk and a piece of fruit.  A well balanced, well rounded diet is a good thing.

Some children don't get breakfast at all.  She is lucky to have a Mommy who cares enough about her to make sure what she is eating is healthy.

    Have a good day, girls.

  10. Cookies are never a good breakfast choice.  But that doesn't mean it would hurt her to have one for breakfast if she is really really good:)
