Is a Trek 4300D 2007 edition a good bike for 472 dollars?

I am going to buy a good beginning bike to ride on trails and roads. Is the Trek 4300D (disc brakes) 2007 edition a good bike for 472 dollars at my local bike shop? Is this the normal price it goes for? They also have the 2008 edition for 50 dollars more. which one would you go with?

I paid less than $460 for my Trek 4500 2007 model last fall.  From what I remember, when shopping for my bike, there was a big jump in quality and components between the 4300 and the 4500.  I really like my Trek 4500 and would recommend it.

$479.99 is the msrp price.

Seems a touch pricey.  There are Gary Fisher and Raleighs out there for less for an entry-level bike.  However, if you have had good experiences with this bike shop, a few extra dollars is worth the relationship in the long run.

Decide just how hard you might want to hammer this bike.  If you are pretty aggressive, get a bike with a better fork and brakes or you'll be dissatisfied pretty quickly.  If you ride in a more leisurely manner, it'll probably be just fine.

I've heard good things about the Trek 4500.  Ask your dealer about the difference in components, especially the fork and brakes.  It's cheaper to buy the components on a built bike than it is to add them later.
