Is a USB wireless adapter and a desktop/laptop card the same thing?

The destop/laptop cards that go into the pc to connect wirelessly to an wireless router and the adapter that get plugged into the pc, have the same function? Can an adapter work as a wireless router?

Basically they both will give get you connected wirelessly to a wireless router. No, you cannot use one of the adapters as a router. Theres no way for that to happen.

But yeah, you can say that using a pci wireless card is for desktops and the usb adapter is more common for older modem laptops that do not have wireless included

Both devices enable a pc to connect to a wireless access point.

However these devices are not wireless routers.
