My fiance and I want our good friend to perform our marriage, so she got ordained by the Universal Life Church on line. I've heard it's recognized in California, but not in New York City. Does anyone know about Connecticut? I've had a hard time finding answers on line. Thank you!

  1. ULC has filed in every state; in a couple of states there is a requirement that there be a congregation.  You should call your local courthouse and ask them.  They have all of the requirements.   i

It sounds like they want someone with an active congregation.  Here's what I found on one site:

Officiants: All ordained or licensed clergymen belonging to this

state or any other state may perform marriages as long as they

continue in the work of the ministry. Marriage license must be

completed by the minister and returned to the city or town clerk.

Also, hopefully your friend is ordained through ulchq.com or the ulc seminary site;  if it's the monastery site, they're not actually affiliated w/ULC any more.

    Edit - Here's what about.com says:

    Officiants:

Judges, retired judges, Connecticut state referees, Connecticut justices of the peace, and ordained or license clergymen (belonging to any state) may perform weddings in Connecticut. If a friend or relative wants to perform your wedding ceremony, they can if an authorized officiator is also present to confirm your marriage ceremony and to sign your marriage license.
