Question:

Is a VERY active Goldfish a good or bad thing???

We got our first goldfish very recently and yesterday transferred it to a bigger tank with the view to add 2 friends to it in a week or so as long as the water is still ok.

The fish has been VERY active since about half an hour after being in the new tank and I'm not sure if it's normal and that it's just happy being in a bigger more fun tank or if there's something wrong to make it so hyper???

My husband is the one who did the tests on the water before the fish was transferred so I don't know all the readings but I know he said it was supposely ok for the fish at that point so we went ahead.

Should I be worried?

Thanks in advance

  1. NO! Don't be worried! When goldfish are moved into bigger tank and have more friends, they get more active because they are interacting with there friends and exploring there new enviornment!

Unless you dropped some crack in there and they are seriously going wacko, i would'nt worrry about it!

  2. It's active because it has room to move and clean water.  I hope that you cycled the tank before you added the fish.  Just running a tank for a bit doesn't build up the bacteria you need.

I wouldn't add any buddies if the tank wasn't cycled first because the ammonia overload will be too much.  Also for 3 goldfish you would need at least a 40 gallon tank for them to live healthy lives.

  3. As long as your nitrItes are ok, it is fine. Do not use test strips, always use liquid kits, strips break down when exposed to oxygen and can give you false tests.

  4. Is your goldfish just swimming around more? or is he darting around the tank madly?

if it's darting this is because your goldfish is irritated to something..did you clean the new tank with soap? goldfish are allergic to soap.. you'll have to do a water change, quite a big one and clean the sides of the tank (just rub them down with a clean cloth whilst the fish are still in there)

if it's not this let me know =]

  5. its nature tha fish love to swim the bigger the better adding new tank mate should be quarantine first it could carry diseases.

  6. That means is happy or is just really active....

  7. nothing to worry about it is just enjoying the bigger environment

  8. So long as you added water conditioner, he's just a very happy fish. If you don't add dechlorinater and he starts being hyperactive then resting almost motionless, it means the chlorine is burning his gills. You sound like a responsible fish owner, so he must be simply overjoyed with his new home! :)

  9. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. It is just enjoying the bigger tank. Most fish aren't active because they don't have enought room to be.
