According to Webster’s dictionary a vegetable is anything made or obtained from plants (2004). Watermelon is a member of the cucurbitaceae plant family of gourds (classified as Citrullus Lantus), related to the cucumber, squash, and pumpkin (Maynard, 2001).

At first glance, I said fruit, but after a little research, now I think it's a vegetable.

The watermelon is Oklahoma's state vegetable! =o And watermelon seeds are usually in the vegetable seed section of stores (but WHOLE watermelons are usually in the fruit section of stores)

I read, though, that a watermelon is in the same family as cucumbers, squash, and pumpkins (all three of those are veggies), so while it is a common misconception that a watermelon is a fruit, it is actually a vegetable.
