Genetically, the Arabs and Italians are very close.  During the height of the Roman Empire, North Africa was where a lot of Roman grain came from.  The empire also encompassed a good part of Asia Minor, which is largely Arab today.  As a result, there was a lot of shared DNA.  Northern Europe was never as successfully controlled by the Romans, so there was not as much intermingling over the years.
