  1. I would hire someone with a real BA over someone with an online "BA".

  2. That depends on the online school that is chosen. Obviously, a 'degree' from Joe's College of Arts and Sciences and Screen Door Repair will be viewed quite differently than will a degree from Harvard's online programs.

Be careful if you choose an online school and research the accredidations and acceptance of its degrees.

  3. On line schools are of varying quality and varying degrees of acreditation or not accreditation. Each on line school should be looked at separately./

  4. I think it's all about what you make it to be...you can flunk your way through real college or online college, or you can be successful at either one. But I dont' think we are "quite there yet" as far as accepting online degrees as valid or as effective.

  5. In the United States, you will want to look for a college that is accredited to insure quality.

In the Southeast, the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools (SACS) accredits schools. So, they would be the ones that accredit University of Virginia, Vanderbilt, etc. They have links to other reputable accrediting bodies at http://www.sacscoc.org/links.asp

Check to make sure the school you are interested in is accredited by one of these major bodies (there are other "accreditations" out there, you can't just pick a school that has some accreditation - they may only be certified to turn out good truck drivers, which is no good if you want to study biology)

I've got one Master's in face-to-face setting, and almost done with a second in an online program, and the online program is NOT the same: I still have colleagues from the face-to-face program I finished 15 years ago, but I'm not even sure I know the names of many people in my online program.

Also, you may want to ask some employers in your area: are online degrees (even if they are accredited) seen as acceptable? They might be fine in some fields, but not approved of in others.

  6. In the UK we have long had the 'Open University'. It has been running for decades. Using late night TV to give lectures at first, now moved to an on-line model.

Its well known and established. It is taken as seriously as a campus degree here in the UK. Indeed very much so, as it shows a much greater degree of self discipline and motivation, than rolling into lectures hungover like a campus student.

In your country I would imagine the on-line will eventually become more accepted as people get use to modern ways of learning. But employers take time to adjust to the new like anyone else.
