Question:

Is a bank manager a good job?

I was thinking of taking a course: Business Management (Retail Banking) to become a Bank Manager, but I need to know if it's a good job. I have done some research, but I would like a personal opinion! Is it paid well, when you first start? I would most likely be working for Barclays, as they have a course with Nottingham Trent University? Any information? Thanks!

  1. yes it's a good job. perhaps by the time you have finished your course the economy will be coming out of recession and the credit markets may be more 'normal' but even if not, if it's what you want to do you shouldn't be put off.

It pays well but the bigger issue with a lot of finance under graduates is the tendency just to pick out the job for the money. This is very much what I did and ignored everyone who told me to be honest with myself. Such a job requires STRONG interpersonal skills -  you have to like working with people and handling all sorts of difficult personalities and people both as colleagues and customers.

With most jobs if you are honest about your strengths and exploit those, the money will take care of itself. If you chose something you know you are good at or have a real interest in, you will excel in it and earn even more than the average for that profession. You will end up better off than if you went into a profession which reportedly pays more but one in which you have hit a ceiling because you either don't have the hunger or personal skills to progress further.

Sounds like you putting yourself in a good position doing a course accredited by the Bank and if I were you I'd get even a small amount of work experience to test out different work environments.

  2. A couple of years ago maybe-but since the bank reclaims started theres been more leaving than joining !!

I guess you wont take kindly to knowing I have helped 100s personally on the biggest uk reclaims website- where incidentally there are bank workers too !!! I have been a Mod there for 2 years.

  3. You usually have to have experience as a loan officer and be a good salesperson in order to be a bank manager. Ask yourself: Do I have any of those skills?

  4. yes of course

  5. Most banks have a salary scheme for their managers. They must be competitive for managers salaries in the banking industry. Your first start to be a bank manager, should be to join Barclays so that you can be selected to join their course with Nottingham Trent University.
