I know a pea is a legume, and a black-eyed pea is a legume. The black-eyed pea is also called a black-eyed bean. So is it a bean or a pea?

  1. It is a bean.

It really doesn't matter though, because we use the words 'pea' and 'bean' interchangeably for other things too. Like chickpeas are also called garbanzo beans. Beans are legumes too. Peanuts have a lot more in common with beans/peas than with other nuts.

  2. it is a bean

  3. The black eyed pea is a subspecies of the cowpea, grown for its medium-sized edible bean, which mutates easily giving rise to a number of varieties, the common commercial one called the California Blackeye being pale-colored with a prominent black spot.

More than you wanted to know...

  4. It's a bean just like chick peas are garbanzo beans.
