Very subjective, the quality of a used BMW vs a newer one is completely different, since they need a lot of maintenance when older.

What year and mileage 325 are you considering?

You cannot just put gas and oil in a BMW and expect to run forever like a toyota or honda, it's really a different lifestyle?  Are you ready for it?!

The important stuff is very reliable.  Assuming you're talking about E46 (2000 to 2006?), window regulators fail regularly.  Another common failure is the general module (electrical component which controls door locks, windows, etc.)  You'll probably never be broken down on the side of the road, but you might be locked in or out.

Mostly, in that they usually won't leave you stranded on the roadside like a Peugeot will but all BMW's live in the repair shop.

I would say that most European cars are fairly reliable, trailing Japanese by a notch. Be sure to get a 325 without the infuriating iDrive function- which, from what I heard, is a user interface that drives people mad.

Despite being reliable, maintenance and replacements are absurdly expensive if you buy factory. Bmw 3- series offers one of the best handling and performance of sedans, so i recommend sticking with it. Or you can get a G35 that comes deadly close to it......your choice =)

Very old ones pre 1990 are AWESOME still today.  The newer ones say for the last 18 years NO..

my 92 starts every time.  Drives great, never stalls or leaves me in the parking lot somewhere..  No problems with reliability.  Just replacing old, worn out parts here and there.

It really depends on the model. my e30 ran for 386,000 miles until wrecked on only routine maintenance. My neighbors e46 has 207,000 and only maintenace. The 3 series is a Car and Driver best "Best Buy" 17 years in a row. Must be somrthing good going on!
