Is a boxer a good dog to get?

Question

I was thinking about getting a boxer puppy and a couple people say that they are not good guard dogs. Is that true? I would love to hear from owners that have boxers. If its not true stand up and defend your loyal companion and let me know. If it is true, well I guess the truth is the truth. Either way I would like to know

This is an incredibly high energy dog that requires a lot of physical and mental stimulation.  With the proper training though this dog can be a hard worker and willing to do nothing but please.  Be sure you research your breed before you buy!

if you want a guard dog, i would suggest something different. maybe an akita, or a german shepard. if you still want a boxer, go right ahead. a boxer is still a good watchdog, barking when people come near. but it got its name because it uses its front paws a lot to "box," if you want a dog that will attack strangers if they come near you, i might go with a karelian bear dog. they are called karelian bear dogs because they are used to hunt bear up in the mountains. if the bear starts attacking the owner, the dog will either drive the bear off, or die trying. a komondor is another type of dog that is often raised around sheep. it looks like sheep, so an unsuspecting wolf or coyote will try to kill the dog's "pack members" and get a deadly surprise. this dog, also is a dog willing to give its life for its master. hope this helped, and research the breedsa lot first.

A boxer will fight to the death to save the family, especially the children. They are used for guarding, police work and just as af family dog. If you want your dog to be guard dog and a family dog, get a boxer. They are great with kids, and they will protect them.

I OWN A BOXER. I HAVE BRED THEM FOR OVER 15 YEARS. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM HAS TURNED OUT TO BE THE GUARD DOG OF A NEARBY FAMILY. IF YOU ASK ME, THEY ARE JUST AS EQUAL AS A GERMAN SHEPHERD. WHICH I HAVE BRED FOR ABOUT 9 YEARS. TAKE MY ADVICE. THOSE OTHER PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. GET A BOXER. THEY ARE FUN, LOVING, GREAT WITH KIDS, AND LOYAL. YOU WILL BE THANKFUL OF ME IF YOU GET A BOXER. I SUGGEST NOT TO CROP IT'S EARS. THEY HAVE A 75% CHANCE OF NOT SURVIVING.

I have a DEAF boxer and she protects us, 10 people live in my house and she barks when a stranger is there. She knows how to guard the yard with my other mixed breed dog. And well my 4 month puppy is getting there.

THEY ARE GREAT guard dogs!

In my experience, boxers are love sponges who crave attention. They're adorable dogs, but they wouldn't be my first choice for a guard dog, if that's what you're looking for.

I don't know who gave this false information. i own a 1month old boxer, i can tell you they are very obedient and learn things quickly. and as far as being a good guard dog  lets just say i dare someone to step into my yard bc i know my dog will let me know they are there before they hit my porch. i would not give my boxer up for nothing they are definitely one of the best all around breeds out there.

I own a Boxer and I must say that I have never owned a more loyal dog. He is the perfect combination of friendly and protective. He is the greatest companion I could ever hope for and I feel safe having him around when I am alone at night. Go for it!

Boxers are awesome dogs! I don't have one, but they third favorite one and I plan on getting one when I move. They will defend you and your property with their life. Great jogging compainions. They are one of the friendliest dogs ever. They are awesome with kids and othere dogs, too, when properly socialized. I reccomend you get one.

I have one and they are extremely loyal and territorial over "their" owners. They are also very friendly and love to sleep under the covers! Mine does anyway! haha. A.D.D. is something mine has also. He did, however, graduate from puppy kindergarten, so you knwo they are capable of being trained! They have very minimal health problems, if any. Just make sure he/she has lots and lots of room to run!!

boxers are the most wonderful dogs to have, treat them right and you get everything you could wish for back from them.
