Is a butterfly a bug or an animal?

I just came across a question that asked for a list of animals that started with the B, and many of them included Butterfly is that right?

  1. It's both... Insects are animals. It's not a mammal, though... Remember, it starts out as a caterpillar.

    A butterfly is an insect, technically an animal.

    It is not however vertebrate, the common misinterpretation of the word animal.
