Question:

Is a camera like a scepter?

Does it give authority to those who wield it? Many members of my family think so. They think because they are holding a camera, they can tell ne to stand somewhere, stand still, smile, look this way, etc. They even get irritated if I don't do it right. I never even consented to have my picture taken, much less agreed to be bossed!

Doesn't etiquette require that they ask permission first?

  1. In a foreign country they should ask for permission frst...Here you can just laugh and while happily going about your business ask the photographer if he or she has a model release....Or you could just say "Not today please"  which can be translated as "Never".

Another way to handle it is to get a camera and put it up to your face.  It doesn't have to have film in it.

  2. You have a point.  Sometimes I say, "really, no thank you."  But if it's a photo where you're the only missing sibling or grandchild, for example if it means something to the person to have all of their family together, then consider it your good deed for the day.

If it's paparazi then that's different.
