Is a car that gets 23 MPG in city a good car? I have a 98 ford Contour Se?

Unless it's some kind of subcompact or hybrid, that is pretty good. For a 98 Ford, that is good. I have a 95 Chrysler and get about the same in town economy too.

Just for the city?  That's good.  The people above don't know what they are talking about.

My Honda Civic can do 41 mpg on the hwy (very good).  And on COMBINED hwy and city it only gets about 26 mpg (these are real life numbers - not theoretical and actually measured over 600 miles).

That's pretty good mileage. Not great, but OK. Only you can decide whether it's good enough for you. There are cars from almost every auto manufacturer that get better mileage than that, but you have to buy them, and that's not cheap, and they may not be a car that fits your needs. Again, only you can decide.

ford means FOUND ON ROAD DEAD, get a Honda or a Toyota and stop worrying bout mpg.

thats less than my girl's focus... gets 27 city.

i got a corolla thats getting 35 city! but i have to put in lots of effort to get that 35 mpg.

yes it is good... lol drive an oldsmobile bravada like me... you get 13 MPG   OMG YES i know... lol

my contour i could drive on $20 all weekend...

this thing lol $20 will barely get back on the road :(  and gas has went down

not really i get 24 and my old car got 30...

If you want good city miles you have to go with inline 4 banger with a small liter cylnder.  

My geo metro was a 4 cyl 1.2 liter and I got 30 mpg city.

my new car is a 4 cyl 2.2 liter and I get 24 mpg city.
