  1. yeh better than being on the road at all hours of the day and night, the pay potential may be a little less, but set hours/shifts for the most part, good work, good benefits. take it if you can

  2. Yes, depending on what you like to do, it can be a very good job.

Like most RR jobs the benefit package is good, the work is a bit gritty or dirty, as you might expect working on railcars, frequently outdoors.

If you like working with your hands, dont mind doing some welding, it can be a very good job.

Not  a very large turnover in "car toad" jobs, people tend to stay with them, that tells you something.

  3. i agree with all three of th e previous answerers.  i am/was a carman with the up i am now a car foreman.  the job is stable.  you are required to work in any weather but it is; like any other job, what you put into it.  if you are mechanically inclined and interested in doing things corectly you won't hav e a problem at all.

current pay in my part of the country is around 21 or 22 per hour.  benefits are real good.  and the chance for advancement if your are interested is very good

  4. If you can handle the weather and the equipment, it's a good job.  CSX has good benefits and good pay.  If you've been working indoors in a GE Lighting factory for 13 years, I think you better give it a lot of careful thought about whether you're going to be able to be outside laying on the ground when there's ice on the ballast and the temps are below zero.  It's not like a factory, you'll be working for a living.

  5. yes, its a very good job. I am a carman for the PTRA in Houston, TX. Welding, inspecting, hands on work, not at all bad.
