  1. No.

Children's martial arts is basically a game of "follow the leader."

It is tough to teach a child philosophy or advanced ethics.

  2. no a kids black belt is....well a kids black belt.  kids karate is kids karate nothing more nothing less

  3. It depends on the school.

My school breaks down Junior vs. Senior at age 16.  Juniors get a Sempai title while Seniors get a Sensei title.

I don't know any Juniors who tested with less than 7 years experience.  Most have around 10.  Seniors sometimes test with as little as 5 years experience.  Of course, this is dependent on a lot of other factors.

Both Juniors and Seniors take the same test, but the juniors are not required to know as much self-defense.  At 16, they start learning the extra self-defense and by 18 they usually earn their Sensei title.

  4. No. Generally once the child become an adult, he will be downgraded to a lower color adult belt and have to work back up to black.

  5. How does a kid manage to get a black belt? In BJJ you don't get a black belt till minimum of 18 years old. Its usually takes about 10-12 years to get a black belt so I would think its not the same as a legit adult black belt.

  6. In Tae Kwon Do, let's say you see a kid with a black belt with two yellow tips that looks like he is a 2nd degree black belt.

In fact, he is not a 2nd dan, but a 2nd poom.

I'm sure karate has some sort of "poom" terminology, but I don't remember what it was.

When the child reaches a certain age, he can test for his/her real black belt certificate.  He/she does not have to be downgraded first, but they do have to pass the adult black belt grading test.

  7. No it's definetely not.  I was an Tae Kwon Do instructor for several years.  If your parents pay your monthly tuition, the instructor must give you belts.  Eventually over time, you will receive a blackbelt  regaurdless of the childs skill level.  The trick is, on top of your monthly tuition, you usaully have to pay an extra fee for testing and for your belt.  It is possible for a child or adult to fail a belt test but rare.  It really depends on what discipline you are talking about and the location of the dojo or school.  Most tradition martial arts are a money making business, meaning you pay and you will eventually get a belt.  Yes it is the same belt, same color, same material, but no it does not mean the same skill level, come on now, whos gona win in a fight, a child blackbelt or an adult blackbelt.

  8. It depends upon the school, and the child.  I personally would not award a child a black belt until the child is at least 13 years old and I feel the child could beat up an untrained adult that is about his or her size.  I'd say that once a child gets into the teen years

    a) the maturity will most likely not be there in terms of what we think of for a black belt, but

    b) the combat effectiveness may be there

Yes, there are fifteen year old boys who can beat up thirty year old men, particular the type of guy who has not exercised since he was twenty.

Remember, in some countries, children are fighting wars.   Why wouldn't a child not be able to be a 1st degree black belt if the child has the size and strength of an adult?

I think part of the issue we have is what we think of when we say "black belt".  Do we mean a "master of the basics" or do we mean a "master of the art"?   Can one be an "instructor" or a "coach"  but not be a "master" or even a "grandmaster"?

  9. The martial arts used to be self-defense. In the 1970's and since it has become a business for the most part. As such things have changed drastically. In the old days on one under 16 was ever promoted to Black belt. Since there were few if any children allowed to train, there were no children black belts.  To be more direct, a child's black belt in no way is equal to an adults.  Children's martial arts are not much more than kindergarten that gives out belts, while charging ridiculous fees plus test fees.

  10. usually no. they are junior blackbelts and get converted at age 18.

  11. not even close
