  1. Hubby and I are British living in the Middle East

Daughter born her - she was given 2 Birth Certificates, one in Arabic and one in English - we took the english version to the British Embassy to register her as 'British' and to obtain her British Passport

'Just cause you're born in a stable, doesn't make you a horse'

    :)

  2. Interesting question- I have a similar situation. My sister was born in London, England, but only lived there for a couple years.

So, my answer would be that no, someone born in France does not neccessarily have a French nationality- unless they have a citizenship there, or their parents are of the French nationality.

    Hope that helps!

  3. Depends on the parent's nationality . The child could have dual citizenship.

  4. France follows a modified version of the principle of jus soli (right of the soil or right of territory), which is used in many  countries in North and South America.   But a child born in French territory is not automatically a French citizen.  That does not mean that they cannot become one through naturalization, but that right is not automatic.

    Wikipedia states that:

A child born in France to foreign parents may acquire French citizenship:

    at birth, if stateless.

at age 18, if resident in France, with at least 5 years residence since age 11, and if he explicitly requests at adulthood (before the 1992 reform of the Code de la nationalité, it was given automatically without administrative red tape).

if born in France of parents born before independence in a colony/territory in the past under French sovereignty.

at birth, if born in France before January 1, 1994.

at age 18, if born in France on or after January 1, 1994.

  5. Yeah but this is France, not the Middle East. If you were born in France, you can claim French nationality when you are 18 if your parents are not French. On the condition that you are still  a French resident.

  6. Oui, il'est un citoyan de la France.
