Question:

Is a condo move-out fee normal?

I own my condo. We are planning to move and the association has notified me that they are going to charge a move-out fee. Is this normal if you OWN your condo?? I don't really understand why my building could charge me a move out fee. I've just never heard of this when someone owns their home.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

  1. Honestly, I've never heard of that either.

My suggestion is to have them show you something you signed to verify that this is true.  And, have them explain why there is a fee.

However, don't let this be one of those minor little inconveniences that stops the transaction.

Finally, condos tend to work differently from a single family residence.  While it is true that your own the living space, the HOA owns the exterior which means they are in charge of maintenance and upkeep.  Technically, you have to cross thier property to exit your property. If you live in a large building then you're going to need to dolly your furniture over the carpet.  They might state that doing this increases wear and tear-a cost that the move out fee subsidizes.

  2. I don't think that's normal. But if the building your condo is in isn't your building then they might have to charge you. You can ask the association why they are charging you a move out fee.

  3. I have the same thing at my building. As long as they charge the fee to all residents, it's fair. And it was probably in the paperwork that explained the rules & regulations you received when you moved in.

  4. You should definitely check with the laws in your state regarding multidwelling ownership and fees by the site owner. That does not sound correct. We have a single dwelling home on property, but still if you own your home, there shouldn't be a 'move out' fee. Is there a real estate lawyer you can ask without costing you a fee? Someone you know or someone you know might know, etc...who may be able to give you some "free" advice? (sounds cheap, I know, but if you have to pay a fee you may as well pay the move out fee) lol

Or check online for the laws in your state. That seems ridiculous to me. Good luck!!!

  5. Never heard of it. And just because they are charging it doesn't mean that its written in the HOA rules and regulations. You should have been given a copy of it when you moved in - if you don't have one then ask for a copy or have them show you where it is written.
