  1. You need to have a certified copy of your marriage certificate.  Contact the county courthouse in the county you were married and ask them to send you a certified copy.

  2. check with your county. I just had to order a bunch of certified copies from my county to change my name, insurance, etc.

  3. Now what?  Provide a certified copy - that's what!

A photocopy of a marriage certificate isn't a legal document.  In fact, many state's marriage certificates have heat sensitive watermarks that show up as "void" on photocopies.

If you need to make a transaction with a business or a gov't agency and they won't accept a photocopy, then you'll have to show them the certified copy.  They aren't legally obligated to accept the photocopy.  (Some may choose to honor it, if they're just checking it for verification purposes.  But they aren't *required* to do so.)

  4. take the original to these institutions, and ask them to make a copy for their records, after they view the original.
